Rene Francisco Wins 2010 National Prize of Plastic Arts

Cuban artist Rene Francisco Rodriguez (Holguin, 1960) will be awarded the 2010 National Prize of Plastic Arts on Dec. 22 at 4:00pm during a ceremony slated for the National Museum of Fine Arts.

The prize is a recognition to the contemporary artist’s work and restless efforts, as Antonio Eligio (Tonel) said: “As he explores the mediating possibilities reserved for creators –an ingrained vision of his concept of pedagogy and closely tied up to his remarkable contribution to the teaching of the arts, he has been carrying out the functions of an artist-anthropologist, of a creator submerged in a cultural trend that drags him in and, at certain moments, he manages to steer through his own practice.” (See Art by Excelencias, year I, No. 2, 2009).

Rene Francisco –many young artists are grateful for his teaching effort at the Higher Institute of Art (ISA)– was recognized by UNESCO in the year 2000 for his alternative pedagogical project entitled From a Pragmatic Pedagogy or DUPP Gallery.

The jury, presided over by master Nelson Dominguez –the recipient of the 2009 National Prize of Plastic Arts- picked the winner from eleven top artists who had been nominated by 22 cultural institutions.
