PINTA announces galleries in the Brazil Contemporary section

Curator Moacir dos Anjos’ selection for Pinta’s Brazil Contemporary section will gather together an interesting group of young galleries that have contributed to the consolidation and diversification of the visual arts of Brazil, that vast, mestizo and singular territory. Still aligned with the premise that Brazil is a country capable of assimilating foreign ideas, but also of producing an autochthonous content, and inspired by the notions concerning Brazilian identity that Oswald de Andrade anticipated in his Manifiesto Antropófago (Cannibalist Manifesto) 1928 , each gallery will present works by one or two of its artists, both emerging and established, who have avoided the stereotypes of what is currently known as “Brazilian art”. Brazil has developed an increasingly consolidated fabric supporting its artists as well as public art related institutions; thus, the artists represented in Pinta broaden and strengthen that notion and contribute greater complexity and richness to art from the region.

The galleries participating in Pinta BRAZIL are: Blau Projects, Sao Paolo; Galería Logo, Sao Paolo; Portas Vilaseca Galería, Rio de Janeiro; Mercedes Viegas, Rio de Janeiro; Galeria de Arte Virgílio, Sao Paolo and Zipper Galería, Sao Paolo. Among the artists who will be showing their work, mention may be made of Bruno Moreschi, Renata Cruz, Vania Mignone, Camila Soato, Martinho Patricio, Armando Queiroz, Daniel Murgel and Flavio Samelo.

The curator, Moacir dos Anjos, has worked as a researcher with Fundação Joaquim Nabuco since 1990 and served as director of Museu de Arte Moderna Aloisio Magalhães (MAMAM) in Recife from 2001 to 2006. He was a visiting research fellow at the Transnational Art, Identity and Nation (TrAIN) Research Center of the University of the Arts, London, in 2008 and 2009. He was the curator of the Brazilian Pavilion (Artur Barrio) at the 54th Venice Biennale (2011), of the 29th Bienal de São Paulo (2010), of Panorama da Arte Brasileira (2007) at Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, and co-curator of the 6th Mercosur Biennial (2007). More recently, he curated the group show Cães sem Plumas (2014), at MAMAM, and retrospective exhibitions of the work of Cao Guimarães (2013), at Itaú Cultural, and Jac Leirner (2011), at Estação Pinacoteca, both in São Paulo. His many published works include Local/Global: arte em trânsito (Zahar, 2005) and ArteBra Crítica (Automática, 2010). He was the guest editor of Pertença. Caderno_SESC_Videobrasil 8 (SESC/Videobrasil, 2012).
