Sleeplessness is a restless state of mind that normally lead up to sleep. A moment characterized by a high level of sensorial activity that keeps us in a limit state between reality and fiction. An intimacy moment within shadows, strokes, silences and our own body. This moment of alert and fantasy called wakefulness, also refers to a collective activity that precedes certain special or magic event.
Sleeplessness, Stroke (Desvelo y traza) installation, May 24 – June 22, proposes viewers to participate in an intimate sensorial experience in a public space. Sara Ramo’s work for site specific Abierto x Obras intervention program is based on a previous project entitled Penumbra she did for Fundação Eva Klavin in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A radically new way of perceiving the old cold-storage room of Legazpi’s slaughterhouse, where viewers construct an image that has to do whit what they see or can’t see, but with their imaginary, the way their brain completes the strokes drawn in the space. And finally, the way they narrate or verbalize their experience. A process that somehow recalls a dark box where, just like in the movies or in analogic photography, the image is printed on the eye step by step.
Abierto x Obras, in Matadero Madrid, in an intervention program that encourages the experimental character of contemporary creation by means of ideas that explore the relation between art and the place where it’s showcased, the old cold-storage room of Legazpi’s slaughterhouse. Since 2007, Abierto x Obras has housed the interventions of such artists as Daniel Canogar, Jannis Kounnellis, Román Signer, Carlos Garaicoa, Fernando Sánchez Castillo, Jordi Colomer, Los Carpinteros, or Cristina Lucas, among others.
