Chilean Art at Casa, Museum

Chilean art in Cuban collections. National Museum of Fine Arts and Casa de las Americas exhibition is set to be inaugurated on January 24 at the Universal Art Building of MNBA (Spanish acronym of National Museum of Fine Arts), 4:00 p.m., and it is going to be opened through March 14.

 

Curated by specialists from Casa’s Department of Fine Arts Wendy Amigo, Susana Mohammad and Romy Martinez, the show is made up of 33 artworks, including engraving pieces, pictures, ceramics, paintings, drawings, an object book and two occasional works created by Roberto Matta. Out of these pieces, 26 belong to Arte de Nuestra America Collection and some of the 16 authors are, Nemesio Antunez, Matilde Perez, Jose Venturelli and Paz Errazuriz. The last one is going to travel to the Cuban capital to attend the opening ceremony.

 

The display of Chilean works will be the first activity carried out by MNBA’s Universal Art Building in 2014 and it is sponsored by Chile’s embassy in Havana. Moraima Clavijo – director of the cultural center – said during a press conference that, thanks to the efforts of the diplomats, the exhibition will show how the diversity of Chilean art is included in Cuban collections. Likewise, the attendees will have the opportunity to admire several artistic trends, such as the surrealism, the kinetic optical movement or the neo-figuration.

 

MNBA keeps on celebrating its 100th anniversary with activities that kicked off in 2013 and will come to an end on April 28, 2014, a date that recalls the foundation of Casa de las Americas. So the institution has prepared a comprehensive work agenda for the first two months of the year. The joint show with Casa de las Americas will be followed by transitory displays Mario Sanchez. One race, on January 17; Posada, profile of an age, on February 7, which is going to pay tribute to the 85th anniversary of Cuban artist Jose Luis Posada Medio, and El arte de la luz, a collection of 53 pieces created by Dutch artist Marie-Antoinette Courtens, scheduled from February 21 to April 13.

 

The January-and-February list not only includes exhibitions, but it proposes concerts and several activities for children. The Museum’s information center is also going to open, at the Cuban Art building’s reading hall, a display of books illustrated by Jose Luis Posada, catalogues of solo-shows and books dedicated to his work. This bibliographic show will be complementing the exhibition on the artist.

 

Another attractive activity is scheduled on Saturday February 11, 10:00 a.m., and it entails the donation to the Universal Art building of a lapis lazuli beetle, which belonged to the 25th Dynasty, by German Egyptologist Christian E. Loeben.
