In order to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the return of Democracy, Marta Minujin presents Agora de la Paz (Agora of Peace), a work inspired by Classical times. The ephemeral building is based on the model of Hephaestus’ Temple, which was built during the 5th century B.C at Athens’ Agora, a meeting place to debate on Democracy. In this case, it’s all about a 13 x 26 m structure made up of 32 columns, most of which are spiraled, thus following Marta Minujin’s philosophy of diagonal angles where everything changes depending on the point of view.
Agora de la Paz is built with tubular structures, covered by woven wire and coated with 25,000 books in plastic bags that totally carpet the surface of the building. These books contain 180 famous phrases on Peace, Friendship and Freedom.
Agora de la Paz will be exhibited at Plaza Alemania (Av. Del Libertador and Cavia), it opens on Thursday October 3 at 16.30 h and can be visited on October 4 – 13, 1100 - 1900 h. On the opening day, the Symphony Orchestra of Buenos Aires will set the beginning of the cultural activities to be carried out within the Agora.
Agora de la Paz is going to represent a meeting spot for artists, thinkers, philosophers, musicians, writers and the public. The scheduled activities include dialogues, lectures, performances, concerts, story reading, plays and meetings to reflect on democracy and the values of peace, friendship and love.
The closing day (Sunday October 15, starting at 1500 h) will be featuring a performance in which the artist is going distribute among the public the books that were covering the Agora de la Paz. These books were specially edited by the artist and include 180 celebrated phrases on peace, friendship and freedom.
As a complement of this mega installation for massive participation, RO Galeria de Arte presents Excepcional: a selection of historic and recent artwork created by Marta Minujin, including neon “Los jugadores de rugby” that was shown at El Batacazo’s Sport Space, in 1966, for Di Tella International Award.
The display can be visited in our space, Paraná 1158, Monday-Friday, 1400 -2000 hrs.
