Islamundi.El otro nos mira desde dentro is the title of the photographic project launched by Canary islander Tato Gonçalves on Sept. 16 at the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno.
Larry Alvarez curates the exhibit at the San Antonio Abad Hall where the author will be exhibiting a longstanding effort consisting of 51 portraits of “friends, friends of other friends, neighbors, people who weren’t born locally and therefore they haven’t lived or worked within the environment of the Canary Islands.” It’s not about a sample of nationalities or diverse cultures, but rather a registry of what society in the Canary Islands actually is today –an international reference for the whole wide due to its cosmopolitan and tri-continental character.
Thus, the images in Islamundi… are not only the result of random or accidental situations, but also a set of captures that make up a global product in which the leading thread is nothing but the glimpse and the presence of foreigners on the island, in Gran Canaria. The mission here is to clarify the territory’s uneven and multiracial identity
