Havana.- Cuban music lovers have today learned of the death of British music producer, George Martin (1926-2016). Mostly known for producing the Beatles, Martin fell in love with the Cuban capital during his 2002 visit as part of the project 'Islands and Ideas', sponsored by the UK Embassy and the Havana Historian Office.
During his stay in Havana, the British artist, who died on Tuesday, shared the stage, in a concert at the Amadeo Roldan Theatre in Havana, with Cuban musicians such as Leo Brouwer and with the National Symphony Orchestra.
Known as 'The Fifth Beatle', Martin visited the Fine Arts Museum and had his picture taken together with the bronze sculpture of John Lennon at the park named in his honor.
In brief exchanges with the local press, he stated that although he knew Cuban music, he had always wanted to listen to it live, played by Cuban-born musicians.
After the break-up of The Beatles, Martin created Air Studios on the Caribbean island of Montserrat. The studio was shut down in 1989 due to damage caused by Hurricane Hugo.
During his career he won several Grammy Awards, produced more than 700 records and was nominated for an Oscar for the soundtrack of the film of The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night.
