See and Look Dominican Wifredo Garcia from Havana

Havana.- The week of the Dominican culture in Havana celebrates today the work of Wifredo Garcia, grand photographer who captured the daily reality of that Caribbean people. This was expressed by Dominican Republic''s ambassador to Cuba, Joaquin Geronimo, after opening the exhibition "Wifredo Garcia: Ver y mirar" at the Hispano-American Cultural Center. With his work, Wifredo knew to capture the human side of people and their daily work, he added.

Referring to the cultural week dedicated to his country, he said, "this will be a good opportunity for everyone to share."

This cultural week, which will run until Saturday, Feb. 27, also celebrates the 172nd birthday of the Dominican country and its independence, the diplomat said.

The exhibition's images -mainly focused on the portrait- are a delight of the forms and nuances, said Maria Elena Aguayo, institutional relations manager at the "Eduardo Leon" Center, to which the exhibited pieces belong.

Now, 17 black and white, and color pictures by the Dominican artist invite to "see and look" at the Hispano-American Cultural Center, in Havana.

Wifredo Garcia was born in Spain on June 15, 1935, but lived until the end of his days (September 1, 1988) in Santo Domingo, where he studied pharmacy and chemistry in college. Later, he did a postgraduate course in that specialty in Kansas, the United States.

His works have been exhibited in Spain, France, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, the United States, Nicaragua, Peru, Ecuador, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Martinique, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
