Inauguration of CONCIENCIA COLECTIVA BY GRAFICA MAYA

Chiapas: The Grafica Maya workshop invites you to the first Conciencia Colectiva exhibition, a display of major engravings that were shown in several institutions in Italy during 2010.

The inauguration took place this Friday, January 28, at the cultural space of El Paliacate Café, on Ave. 5 de Mayo No. 20, Colonia Centro, between 1° de Marzo and 28 de Agosto, San Cristobal.

The Grafica Maya workshop has been giving shape to a movement in which Chiapas’ different cultures converged from an artistic point of view; it is an alternative space to share and generate creative processes resulting in the spiritual growth of the group involved.

Grafica Maya emerged in 2007 as a collective proposal that brought major artists together including Nicolas de Jesus and a few A.C. Bonbajel Mayaetik elements such as Antun Kojtom, Sebastian Santiz Gomez, Pablo Millan, Andres Garcia Lopez. More recently El Mayoral, alias Osvaldo Garcia Muñoz, Lisandro Solis, Peko T’iw, Erik Hernandez, Pedro Ts’ujkin, Maritza Perez, Armando Sanchez, Floridelma Santiz Lopez, Fabiola Santiz Lopez, Xitlaly Gomez, Miriam Gomez and children Alux Antun, Jama Asuncion, Ichel Antonia and Domingo Alfredo have joined in.

Seeking to come up with a space dedicated to the development of plastic arts, the group thought it convenient to aim their efforts at setting up a workshop to put forth the scope of engraving and painting, mainly. Through this meeting place, they wanted to meet the needs of artists who couldn’t further develop their skills because of financial reasons. As a result, the first objective of the workshop emerged: serve as a place where artists willing to improve their work could get together and voluntarily share their experiences in permanent discussion workshops scheduled for every Saturday.

Thus, the artistic exercise fosters communication, exchange of ideas and critical awareness. The project is autonomous, independent and self-sustained.

This group initiative establishes the possibility to discuss concepts on which the Art of the Peoples of Chiapas (vision, world vision, perspective and the strengths of the identity of the people from Chiapas) has been erected, whose scope goes beyond recompiling and rescuing culture, since its values are higher up than folklore and trade market.

Following this trend, Grafica Maya seeks to encourage debates on knowledge about and contributions of different artistic movements. In this sense, it becomes a space for constant artistic reflection and creation, whose main concern lies in the underestimation multicultural expression has traditionally suffered inside and outside Chiapas.

For this purpose, Grafica Maya organizes drawing, engraving and painting workshops. The techniques used are: linoleum, xylography, aquatint, dry point, experimental and mixed. As a novelty, the workshop does not embraces the image of a “teacher” for the practices, but rather encourages own free will exchange of experiences.

Grafica Maya Workshop is currently located on Privada el Tívoli, no. 3A, Barrio de Mexicanos entrance on Honduras 8-10 St. between Ave. Utrilla and Ave. 20 de Noviembre.
