Extends deadline for SWAB’s Fourth Edition

Barcelona: The deadline for art galleries to hand in registrations for the SWAB Fair has been stretched out till Feb. 15. Those willing to be part of the general program and the new Art Project section, slated from May 26 to 29 in this Spanish city will now have more time to submit their candidacies.

Members of the selection committee are Christian Ehrentraut (from Christian Ehrentraut, Berlin); Kristian Jarmuschek (from Kristian Jarmuschek + Partner’s, Berlin); Fred Mann (from Fred Ltd, London); Miguel Angel Sanchez (from ADN, Barcelona); Suzanne Tarasieve (from Galerie Suzanne Tarasieve, Paris), and commissioner Javier Panera (director of DA2 Museum, Salamanca).

This new SWAB fair will give visitors the possibility to take a closer look at contemporary art from 44 galleries, with half a dozen of them joining the Art Project section directed this time around by Lab’bel, Laboratoire Artistique du Groupe Bel, and made up of Laurent Fiévet and Silvia Guerra.

Laurent Fiévet (France, 1969) holds a PhD degree in audiovisual and moviemaking studies. He’s taught at the Sorbonne Nouvelle and Paris 7 universities. The concerns that build a fire under Laurent Fiévet’s work are the implications of referential imaging, its virtual character, collective memory and individual affections. Interactive and ludicrous devices are commonplace in his curatorial and artistic career, mostly exhibited at the Georges Pompidou Center (Arte Vidéo Night, 2009), the Vermelho Gallery in Sao Paulo (Silêncio!, 2008), Munch-Museet d’Oslo (In/Out, 2007) and Kiasma in Helsinki (Suites hitchcockiennes, 2003).

Silvia Guerra (Portugal, 1973) is an art critic and exhibition commissioner. She’s the author of a vast study on contemporary art foundations. She’s worked for the Office of International Affairs of at Art Institute of the Ministry of Culture of Portugal. Since 2006, she’s commissioned such major exhibits as Under Hitchcock (Solar, Vila do Conde, 2007); Les Sans Nom (Trafico, Lisbon, 2009); Lectures en Temps de Crise (Porto, Loulé, Lisbonne, Paris, 2009-2010), and in Lab’bel, Rewind (Lons-le-Saunier, 2010). Her work inquires artistic creativeness in curators and tries her hand at such expositional forms as social networks that greatly favor mobility when it comes to exhibitions.

As in previous editions, the fair’s VIP program –coordinated by Monica Alvarez Careaga (AC2. Santander, Lisbon), will offer collectors and guests a new vision of artistic creation as produced and exposed in Barcelona. At the same time, the SWAB OFF program will once again colonize several public spaces around town.

Organized by the Diezy7 Contemporary, SWAB is a fair that zeroes in on emerging artists and midcareer presented by the most hands-on and creative galleries from around the world. For that purpose, the fair counts on the institutional support of the Generalitat de Cataluña and the Barcelona City Hall, let alone the backing of MANGO as its top sponsor.

During last year’s SAWB, the Pabellon 4 Arte Contemporaneo art gallery in Argentina brought along the works of artists Leon Ferrari and Paula Otegui.
