Growing up in Washington, Mederic Turay immersed himself in North American urban culture, particularly hip-hop, which influenced his artistic evolution. After returning to Ivory Coast in 1995, he pursued Fine Arts studies, where he connected his diverse cultural experiences into his art. Mederic believes that art is the ultimate expression of life and encourages others to pursue their dreams.
His paintings are known for their vibrant colors and intricate patterns, drawing viewers into a captivating visual journey. He sees his work as a reflection of the interconnectedness of the universe, inspired by both personal and collective experiences, including urban and primitive art.
Mederic's art explores the distortion of form, the relationship between figure and background, and the interplay of positive and negative space. Crowns are a recurring motif in his work, symbolizing the aura we radiate to the world. He incorporates collage to bridge the gap between the visible and the invisible, drawing on African primal arts and spirituality.
His paintings feature characters with powerful gazes, conveying nonverbal messages through their eyes. Mederic believes that self-awareness and self-discovery prepare us for the "timelessness" of death, viewing life and death as intertwined aspects of existence.
Mederic's art delves into the invisible world, drawing inspiration from primitive art and African traditions. His work explores the complexity of humanity's evolutionary and cultural history, depicting a wide range of human emotions and experiences.
Mederic Turay's art is a profound exploration of human consciousness, bridging the realms of history, spirituality, and contemporary expression. As Amadou Hampâté Bâ once said, "In Africa, when an old man dies, a library burns," highlighting the importance of preserving and celebrating African culture and tradition through art.Texte
