Institut Giacometti. Giacometti / Sugimoto Staged

In 2013, Hiroshi Sugimoto (b. 1948, Tokyo) was invited by the MoMA to photograph its sculpture garden’s masterpieces, a commission that produced the Past Presence series. Sugimoto then photographed Tall Woman by Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) in broad daylight and at dusk. It evoked in him a connection between the sculpture and the supernatural aspects of traditional Japanese Noh scene, where the living and the dead meet.

The Past Presence series focused on a choice of iconic works from Modern art, questioning the capacity of art to act as a symbolic force in today’s world. In 2019, Sugimoto gifted 8 photographs to the Foundation related to Giacometti’s works from the series. For the first time in Europe, 4 of them as well as a set of polaroids made between 2013 and 2018 will be presented to the public alongside Sugimoto’s films and antique Noh masks from his collection. His personal choice of Giacometti’s emblematic works is also being exhibited in an original and distinctive manner.
