Havana.- The "Guillermo Barreto in Memoriam" Drum Festival begins today in this capital and celebrates the 15th anniversary of an event, aimed at rescuing and promoting the tradition of Cuban popular music. This was expressed by its general director, Giraldo Piloto, for whom the event is a tribute to African and worldwide musics and that have influenced the culture of this country.
The current edition is especially dedicated to young people, responsible for promoting the learning of percussion, he added.
Percussionists from Cuba, Venezuela, Spain, Canada, Chile and Japan will participate from today to March 6 in the meeting, whose main venues are the Havana's Mella Theater, the Tropical Brewery's Salon Rosado, the most famous and "hard-to-please" dance floor in Cuba, and the Habana Music Hall, he announced.
In addition to the dancers and musical performances, the event will host master classes by relevant international percussionists, as the member of Chicago band, Wally de los Reyes, British Pete Lockett, Cuban Alain Perez (flamenco music), and American Alex Acuña, leading the Weather Report project.
As part of the Drum Festival, an international percussion competition will be also held, Piloto said. This event aims to promote the Cuban tradition to play that instrument, which is strongly influenced by the African sounds.
For the first time, there will be a competition for rumba dancers, and for the third time, a contest for dance casino will be developed.
