8th National Engraving Meeting Opens in Havana

The 8th National Engraving Meeting will be taking place in Havana in November, and started with the grand opening of a contest-show on the 1st at the Visual Arts Development Center, 5:00 pm.

 

The display will be gathering 104 artworks created by fifty artists from five provinces, which were chosen among a group of 98 competitors, by the jury made up of Luis Lara, director of the Graphic Experimental Workshop; Margarita Gonzalez, technical deputy director of Wifredo Lam Contemporary Art Center; Rafael Zarza, engraver and professor; Lesbia Vent Dumois, artist and president of UNEAC’s Association of Visual Arts and Liana Rio, curator and specialist from the National Museum of Fine Arts.

The Grand Prize and three mentions were announced on that very day. Collateral awards were also delivered.

 

The Meeting’s Theoretical Event is set to be held on every November Tuesday. Likewise, it will include talks, guided visits, workshops for children, collateral shows, lectures, and other activities.

 

This edition of the event, the first one since 2007, will be useful to assess the status of this discipline, by analyzing from the latest productions, included in Combination Press exhibition by the engraving workshop of the Higher Institute of Art, to the work of prestigious artists like Victor Manuel, Ernesto Garcia Peña, Roberto Fabelo, Raul Martinez, Zaida del Rio, Antonia Eiriz, Nelson Dominguez, Eduardo Roca (Choco), Umberto Peña, Adigio Benitez, Alfredo Sosabravo, among others.

 

In an effort to include the silk screen poster, Raquel Revuelta Theater is going to house collateral show Puñeteros carteles, with the creations of designers Michelle Miyares, Giselle Monzon, Nelson Ponce, Raupa, Roberto Ramos and others, inspired by Virgilio Piñera’s work.

 

The opening featured a festive atmosphere with the presence of video-screenings and electronic music, with artists Mauricio Abad and Marcel Marquez, 7 - 10 pm.
