Havana: Half a dozen large-format pieces painted in oil on canvas by Cuban artist Yaumil Hernandez (Havana, 1972) are being exposed thru May 24 at the Lombillo Palace, Cathedral Square, in Old Havana’s historic center.
According to the artist, “this is a small exhibit of two series I’m working on right now, “Discipline” and “Updates”, as a way to portray the connections between men and machines, a dependency that’s becoming increasingly visible in these times. The huge metropolises are overpopulated by machines rather than by people; they are more mechanical with each passing year. Moreover, to me machines are symbols of totalitarianism and one-way movement. The pieces in this exhibit could have a surreal esthetic, but their pillars prop on the terrain of massive thinking, on the actions of my reality.”
