Eight Colombian Artists Intervene Spaces in Bogota

Colombian artists Sergio Giraldo (Medellin, 1963), Fredy Alzate (Rionegro, Antioquia, 1975), Carlos Castro (Bogota, 1976), Maria Adelaida Lopez (Medellin, 1966), Manuel Quintero Aranguren (Bogota, 1972), Consuelo Gomez Soto (Bogota, 1956), Mariana Varela (Ibague, Tolima, 1947) and Jose Alejandro Restrepo (Bogota, 1959), simultaneously exhibit, through November 2, eight installation projects in eight spaces of Bogota, since they have been handpicked by Chilean artist Mario Opazo, Colombian artist and curator Carlos Uribe and Brazilian curator, editor and writer Rodrigo Moura, as the finalists to the 7^th Edition of Luis Caballero Award.

The nominated pieces are spread all over different areas of Bogota – downtown, Aranda Bridge and Teusaquillo, among others – thus allowing each of these interventions to offer a peculiar approach, depending on the space. So, Sergio Giraldo exhibits at Bogota’s Museum of Modern Art (MAMBO) his 'Espacios imperceptibles' project; Fredy Alzate showcases 'Quinta fachada' at Leopoldo Rother Museum of Architecture; Carlos Castro displays 'Belleza accidental' at Santa Clara Church Museum; Maria Adelaida Lopez shows her 'La casa de los Reyes' at Santa Fe Gallery; Manuel Quintero presents 'Dromos' at Bogota’s Archive; Consuelo Gomez with 'Mesa franca' at the District Square of Las Cruces Market; Mariana Varela has her 'Fracturas' at Textura Center of Contemporary Creation; and Jose Alejandro Restrepo intervenes at the House of National Theater with 'Ejercicios espirituales'.

This is a biannual contest, a flagship of contemporary art in Bogota, created in 1996 and organized by the District Institute of Arts - IDARTES, which calls visual artists, older than 35, to present their installation or artistic intervention projects conceived for a specific space (in situ) in one of the places suggested by the entity or the artist. All in all, out of those eight artists, who have counted on 15,000 Pesos (6,683 Euros), each one, to produce their artistic interventions, only one will stand on October 28 as the winner of the 7^th Luis Caballero Award and receive 120,000 Pesos (53,471 Euros).
