It’s time to take a good look to the new works by Mariajosé Bagazgoitia. And so it is because since her last show at IB Galería, the inhabitants of her paintings have experienced a calm, subtle transformation, like she aims to do things; a rebirth that comes from within as happens with vine shoots. These occupants abandoning their chores, dances and games have become pensive, observers.
They stand, they sit, they reflect. They consider themselves and their context, watching us out of that same square space through which we also look at them. They float, weightless, with their broken shapes extended, defying anatomy, leading us to the ulterior world inhabited by the artist; that world which she doesn’t speak of, but she paints.
Her sketching, pictorial informalism, has now given free rein to her hands’ creative gestures, even when this conquered ease requires a deep knowledge for handling the elements and tools converging in her works. Nothing is casual but fruit of a search and encounter that bring these residents out of their primeval broth. And who, sometimes, also reveal their faces.
