For Art Basel Miami Beach 2014, Rhona Hoffman Gallery is pleased to feature Michael Rakowitz's multi-layered project The Breakup in the Kabinett sector.
Operating within art spaces and beyond them, Rakowitz challenges constructed social political understanding through an artistic practice that folds social practice, archival impulse, and politics into a conceptual framework.
The Breakup (2010-ongoing) conflates The Beatles' 1969 breakup with the concurrent breakdown of diplomacy in the Middle East. The project questions the essence of human and diplomatic relationships and the possibility of repairing torn connections.
An interdisciplinary installation combining sound, collage, and sculptural elements, The Breakup uses the iconic band's fallout as an entry point to dissect more politically influential miscommunications surrounding the Six Day War.
A Professor in the Department of Art Theory and Practice at Northwestern University, Michael Rakowitz has exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2012), dOCUMENTA(13), Tate Modern, London (2010), the 16th Sydney Biennial (2008), SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art, Montreal, Canada (2009), among many others.
